The Somervale curriculum ensures students are given a very good grounding in the basics of English and Maths as well as providing a broad and balanced curriculum. Students have an increasing amount of choice as they get older.
Our curriculum is supported by a variety of day-trips or longer visits which include foreign travel (an example of which is the visit to France, available to all Year 7 students) and occasional residential courses.
Parents have a legal right to withdraw their children from Religious Education and Sex & Relationships Education they must write to the headteacher in the first instance.

Homework is set as a
purposeful activity arising out of work being done in lessons and every student
has a school diary in which to record work set. Homework encourages initiative
and self-discipline in students. Tasks vary but will include written work of all
kinds, as well as research, learning and revision. Homework increases
significantly at Key Stages 4 and 5, where coursework is an important part of
GCSE and A level exams.
The completely refurbished Somervale library is a wonderful resource for reading and research. It is open to all pupils before and after school as well as throughout the day. It is well stocked with books and magazines and has a suite of computers for independent research work. Several students help the librarian through becoming librarians themselves.
Students at Somervale experience a wide range of ICT applications and processes. The school has five main computer areas, including the Media Suite which offers state of the art digital video and media software. Music has a set of Apple Mac computers, which are used for digital editing, and there is computer provision in many other areas of the school, including the Library, Learning Support, Technology and other subject bases. Broadband Internet enhances student learning across the network.
Student AssessmentThe school's assessment policy conforms to the statutory requirements and in many ways exceeds them. Assessments are made regularly at the end of a piece of work, on completion of a unit, or following a test or examination. Reporting to parents is done at least three times a year through formal reports, scheduled parents' meetings and academic review days.
